The Nox Sensor of the exhaust treatment system has multiple installation positions, depending on different engine applications. But Cummins usually installs it in the silencing section of EGP. Washing the nitrogen Oxygen Sensor with water during operation can cause damage to the sensor. The nitrogen oxide sensor assembly is a fully intelligent device consisting of three parts: a sensing head, a control module, and a connecting cable. The sensors currently provided by Cummins can only be used to measure the value of NOx at the outlet. It communicates with the ECM through the body bus, and also has a self diagnostic system inside the NOx sensor assembly. The sensor monitors its own operation and reports any faults to the ECM through the body CAN bus. The entire NOx sensor assembly is a single component, and no individual component can be replaced independently!
So how should we maintain it on a regular basis? 1. Due to the presence of ventilation holes and pressure balancing holes on the nitrogen oxide sensor, as well as the fact that the exhaust pipe is generally located behind the driver's cab, this location is prone to water ingress, and the entire nitrogen oxide sensor will be damaged after water ingress. Typically, 80% of damaged nitrogen oxygen sensors are due to this reason. Therefore, it is necessary to wrap this component in waterproof material during normal times. 2. Fixed in a place with less vibration, the nitrogen oxide sensor itself has an anti vibration design. If the vibration is large, it can cause the nitrogen oxide sensor to work improperly. 3. To prevent water from entering the exhaust system, due to the ceramic structure of the probe part of the nitrogen oxide sensor, it will self heat to a very high temperature during operation. If it encounters water, it will cause the probe part to explode. 4. Don't tamper with it. Some repairmen may tamper with the nitrogen oxide sensor in order to reduce the burning of urea in the aftertreatment or eliminate certain faults, but they are unaware that this can easily cause damage to it.
